My Grandfather Shri Gunadhar Maity (February 1905 – March 1988) was born in a village named Garchak, 15 km from Tamluk town.

He was also famous by the name of ‘Two-rupee doctor’. He is still remembered and embraced for his way of treatment within that minimal amount. No matter at what hour of the day, he was always up for his selfless service, that’s what made his name linger in the mouth of the people of his town still today. Shri Gunadhar Maity was not only recognised for his generous work and humanity, rather was a man of a kind, who was also funny and witty with an immense sense of humour and sanctity.
We can get a glimpse of his witty knowledge with an incident which took place long back: There was this patient who was allegedly mentally unstable, came at a middle of the night claiming he doesn’t have blood in his body and that he is suffering from bloodlessness. Shri Gunadhar Maity put some red povidone-iodine in his mouth and tricked him saying its blood. He then went home satisfied. The patient’s family members greeted Shri Gunadhar Maity for his forbearance and easing the neurotic patient’s mental sanity.
During that period of time, there was hardly any doctor in our town other than Shri Gunadhar Maity. Later, in his life, he also opened a medical store in Tamluk to serve the locality and the people of the town with better facilities. He will forever be remembered for his humbleness.
